What is BLS?

Basic Life Support, commonly known as BLS, is a foundational level of emergency care used when someone experiences cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or a choking episode. The goal is to keep oxygenated blood moving through the body until advanced medical help takes over. Training covers high-quality CPR, AED operation, airway management, and recognizing life-threatening emergencies before they escalate.

BLS goes beyond a single technique. It represents a full certification that teaches coordinated emergency response across a range of critical situations. For professionals working in nursing, medicine, emergency services, dentistry, therapy, and other patient-facing roles, BLS certification is not optional. It is a professional requirement.

Your BLS credential stays valid for two years. After that, renewal is required to stay compliant with employer and licensing standards.

Key Benefits of BLS Training

Teaches you reliable CPR technique, correct AED use, and airway management so you can keep a patient stable until help arrives.

Gives bystanders and healthcare workers the tools to dramatically improve survival odds during cardiac arrest.

Builds the calm, focused mindset you need to respond without hesitation during high-pressure situations.

Keeps you in compliance with certification requirements set by healthcare employers and licensing boards across New Jersey.

Provides realistic, scenario-based practice covering emergencies involving adults, children, and infants.

Strengthens your overall readiness for emergencies in hospitals, schools, workplaces, and community settings.

Who Needs BLS Certification in New Jersey

BLS certification is commonly required for healthcare professionals and other individuals who may need to respond to cardiac, respiratory, or choking emergencies. While certification requirements vary by employer, profession, and workplace, many organizations require current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification before employees or students begin their duties. Below are some of the professions that commonly require or recommend BLS certification.

Hospital & Clinical Healthcare Staff

Registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), physicians, physician assistants, medical assistants, patient care technicians, phlebotomists, and other clinical staff are commonly required to maintain BLS certification. These professionals care for patients in hospitals, outpatient clinics, physician offices, and specialty practices where they may be called upon to respond to cardiac arrest, respiratory emergencies, or choking. BLS training helps them deliver immediate care while working as part of a coordinated healthcare team.

Emergency Medical Services and First Responders

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other first responders often need BLS certification as part of their professional qualifications. Because they are frequently the first trained personnel to arrive at an emergency, they must be prepared to provide high-quality CPR, use an AED, manage the airway, and stabilize patients until advanced medical care is available.

Dental and Allied Healthcare Professionals

Dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, radiologic technologists, and other allied healthcare professionals may also require BLS certification. Although cardiac or respiratory emergencies are uncommon in many outpatient settings, these professionals must be prepared to respond appropriately if a medical emergency occurs while a patient is under their care.

Healthcare Students and Workplace Responders

Medical students, nursing students, EMT students, dental students, and other healthcare trainees are often required to obtain BLS certification before beginning clinical rotations. In addition, workplace safety personnel, school nurses, athletic trainers, lifeguards, childcare providers, and designated emergency response team members may complete BLS training to meet employer requirements or strengthen emergency preparedness within their organizations.

This is the future of BLS indeed. I was a little hesitant at first in taking this course because it says there's no instructor in the lab room for the skills assessment. However , when I did the in person skills assessment this morning, the setup turned out to be more efficient and one , if not the best BLS setup I have attended so far because of 2 reasons: 1. you get a real time feedback - if you're doing your compressions right - audiovisually at that. The computer shows green if your compression depth is good and it shows red if you're lacking; it tells if your rate is just about right or if you're doing it way too fast. Just the real time feedback you need. 2. it allows you to practice before taking the graded assessment which is so helpful. i told my friends to renew their BLS through Same Day because right after walking out of that skills lab room, i kind of feel confident about my BLS skills. and that says a lot ~

Everything from start to finish was excellent. The online course goes at your pace based on skill level. The youtube videos and emails explaining everything from the office access and location and key reminders for a successful hands-on portion was super helpful. I work in Manhattan and although my hospital offers BLS training this was super convenient and close to home! Lastly, this was my first time doing the hands-on portion of BLS without a human trainer, but I was pleasantly surprised at how seamless the process was and direct and helpful the feedback was from the computer program. The office and location — very easy to access if you follow the directions emailed to you and watch the youtube video of best door to enter at the back of the building. I went on a Sunday, where there was only cleaners in the building, I was slightly nervous because it was empty, but it was completely safe. If you are worried, just book during the week when the other offices are open. Lastly, the office was clean and equipment very well maintained. Overall, phenomenonal experience that is close to home and incredibly convenient. PRO TIPS: 1.) Read theemails in depth and have them on your phone for when you are accessing the building 2.)Watch theYouTube videos that are emailed to you to pass the hands-on portion of the skills exam quickly and on your first try 3.) Remember your username and password to login. To the computer for your skills session

Ive gotten recertifications in cpr many times as a healthcare worker and same day cpr is by far the easiest and quickest way i’ve been able to get my certification! If it’s your first time getting a certification it may be a bit challenging if you are unfamiliar with the equipment, but there’s more than enough resources provided to you to help you along the way! Overall highly recommend!

This was my first time doing the skills portion of BLS, while having remote assistance via camera. I think it will be easier now in the future, since I did it once, but the assistance was phenomenal without even needing to have to ask for help!!!! Thank you!!!!!
