What is ACLS?

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support is a clinical certification from the American Heart Association for healthcare providers who are expected to recognize and manage serious cardiovascular emergencies. ACLS picks up where Basic Life Support leaves off. It adds cardiac rhythm interpretation, intravenous medication protocols, advanced airway management, and structured team resuscitation to a provider’s skill set.

Through ACLS training, providers learn to identify and respond to cardiac arrest, acute coronary syndromes, symptomatic bradycardia, tachyarrhythmias, stroke, and post-cardiac arrest care. The certification is built around AHA algorithms that give clinical teams a reliable, evidence-based roadmap to follow when every second matters.

ACLS certification is valid for two years. Renewal is required before expiration to stay current with employer requirements and state licensing standards across New Jersey.

Key Benefits of ACLS Training

Sharpens your ability to quickly recognize life-threatening cardiac rhythms and choose the right course of action.

Gives you a solid working knowledge of emergency medications including when to use them, how much to give, and when to adjust.

Prepares you to function effectively as both a team leader and a team member during a resuscitation effort.

Keeps you compliant with the certification requirements set by New Jersey hospitals, health systems, and professional licensing boards.

Builds real clinical confidence through case-based practice and immediate feedback during your skills session.

Covers the complete range of AHA ACLS algorithms including acute coronary syndromes, stroke response, post-resuscitation care, and special resuscitation situations.

Who Needs ACLS Certification in New Jersey?

Emergency Department and Critical Care Staff

Physicians, emergency medicine residents, ICU nurses, critical care nurses, and nurse practitioners working in New Jersey emergency departments and intensive care units are generally required to hold a current ACLS certification as part of their employment and clinical practice requirements. These providers routinely care for patients experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, stroke, and other serious emergencies where fast, accurate decision-making is critical. ACLS training keeps them sharp, current, and ready to function effectively when a patient’s condition changes fast.

Hospital Floor and Step-Down Unit Nurses

Registered nurses and advanced practice nurses working on medical-surgical floors, telemetry units, and step-down units in New Jersey hospitals are frequently required to maintain ACLS certification. Though these units see fewer codes than the ICU, emergencies still happen. Having a current ACLS certification means these nurses can respond immediately and bridge the gap before a rapid response or code team arrives.

Anesthesiologists and CRNAs

Anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists are among the most likely providers to encounter sudden cardiovascular or respiratory emergencies during procedures. Their ACLS certification ensures they are current on the latest AHA algorithms and fully prepared to manage an emergency both independently and as part of a care team.

Hospitalists and Internal Medicine Physicians

Hospitalists and internal medicine physicians covering general wards and observation units are routinely involved in emergency responses throughout New Jersey hospitals. Whether they are responding to a code or managing a deteriorating patient before transfer to a higher level of care, current ACLS certification supports their ability to act quickly and follow a structured resuscitation framework.

Everyone needs to use this organization!!!! This was the easiest experience I have ever had with getting a certification or renewing a certification. For a new job I had to become BLS certified. Same Day CPR made this experience so efficient and fun! I really enjoyed both the online learning portion and the skills assessment. I appreciated how flexible it was and how I had many times to choose from over the weekend to do it. I will absolutely be using this company in the future when I have to get recertified. This is the future of BLS indeed. I was a little hesitant at first in taking this course because it says there's no instructor in the lab room for the skills assessment. However , when I did the in person skills assessment this morning, the setup turned out to be more efficient and one , if not the best BLS setup I have attended so far because of 2 reasons: 1. you get a real time feedback - if you're doing your compressions right - audiovisually at that. The computer shows green if your compression depth is good and it shows red if you're lacking; it tells if your rate is just about right or if you're doing it way too fast. Just the real time feedback you need. 2. it allows you to practice before taking the graded assessment which is so helpful. i told my friends to renew their BLS through Same Day because right after walking out of that skills lab room, i kind of feel confident about my BLS skills. and that says a lot ~

Everything from start to finish was excellent. The online course goes at your pace based on skill level. The youtube videos and emails explaining everything from the office access and location and key reminders for a successful hands-on portion was super helpful. I work in Manhattan and although my hospital offers BLS training this was super convenient and close to home! Lastly, this was my first time doing the hands-on portion of BLS without a human trainer, but I was pleasantly surprised at how seamless the process was and direct and helpful the feedback was from the computer program. The office and location — very easy to access if you follow the directions emailed to you and watch the youtube video of best door to enter at the back of the building. I went on a Sunday, where there was only cleaners in the building, I was slightly nervous because it was empty, but it was completely safe. If you are worried, just book during the week when the other offices are open. Lastly, the office was clean and equipment very well maintained. Overall, phenomenonal experience that is close to home and incredibly convenient. PRO TIPS: 1.) Read theemails in depth and have them on your phone for when you are accessing the building 2.)Watch theYouTube videos that are emailed to you to pass the hands-on portion of the skills exam quickly and on your first try 3.) Remember your username and password to login. To the computer for your skills session

Ive gotten recertifications in cpr many times as a healthcare worker and same day cpr is by far the easiest and quickest way i’ve been able to get my certification! If it’s your first time getting a certification it may be a bit challenging if you are unfamiliar with the equipment, but there’s more than enough resources provided to you to help you along the way! Overall highly recommend!

This was my first time doing the skills portion of BLS, while having remote assistance via camera. I think it will be easier now in the future, since I did it once, but the assistance was phenomenal without even needing to have to ask for help!!!! Thank you!!!!!

ACLS Certification FAQs

What is the difference between ACLS and BLS?

BLS covers the fundamentals of CPR, AED use, and airway management. ACLS builds on that foundation and adds cardiac rhythm recognition, emergency medication protocols, advanced airway management, and structured team resuscitation algorithms. BLS is required before starting ACLS.

Yes. A current BLS certification from the American Heart Association is a prerequisite for enrolling in an ACLS course. If your BLS card has expired or you do not yet have one, you will need to complete a BLS course first. We offer BLS classes across New Jersey if you need to get that sorted before moving on to ACLS.

Absolutely. We offer both initial ACLS certification and renewal courses. The renewal process follows the same format as the initial course, online coursework through HeartCode ACLS followed by a hands-on skills check at a verification station. If your card has already expired, you will still complete the same renewal process to get recertified.

The HeartCode ACLS online course works on any modern device including laptops, desktop computers, tablets, and smartphones. All you need is a stable internet connection and an up to date web browser. You can switch between devices as needed since your progress is saved automatically.

Our team is available to help with any questions about enrollment, course access, scheduling, or your eCard. You can reach us by phone or email and we will get back to you promptly. If you run into any technical issues with the HeartCode platform, our staff can point you in the right direction to get things resolved quickly.
